Dhanush sues Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan at the Madras High Court in a civil suit.
The Asuran actor has filed a civil suit against Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan and Dhanush, their production company Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, Tarc Studios LLP, and Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, the Mumbai-based company that Netflix uses to report its investments in Indian content, setting off the most recent flashpoint in the ongoing copyright dispute between the two.
Dhanush's Wunderbar Films prayed the HC to allow permission to sue the corporation and anyone connected to it within the Madras High Court's geographical jurisdiction in its application under Clause 12 of the Letters Patent. Senior attorney PS Raman, acting on behalf of Dhanush, submitted the plea through attorneys Gautam S. Raman and Maithreyi Canthaswamy Sharma, requesting that the bench presided over by Justice Abdul Quddhose allow leave. Nayanthara's attorneys Sathish Parasaran and R. Parthasarathy opposed the request. The court granted leave without delving into the specifics of the main complaint, which concerned the use of a three-second clip from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Nayanthara's Netflix documentary.
More than a week ago, Nayanthara publicly challenged her co-star in Yaaradi Nee Mohini, turning Kollywood into a battleground. Nayanthara wrote an open letter expressing her displeasure with Dhanush's legal notice, which sought ₹10 crore in damages for three seconds of behind-the-scenes video from Dhanush's Wunderbar Films' Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The video in question, she said, were from personal devices and had already been published publicly on social media. She remarked, "Cinema is a fight for survival for people like me, who are self-made," emphasizing her experience working in the field without powerful contacts. She emphasized that Dhanush's activities impacted not only her and Vignesh Shivan but also other people, accusing him of seeking "vengeance" against the documentary and her personal life.
The actor further disclosed that her team had been attempting for two years to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Dhanush, who had not permitted the usage of any of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan's lyrics or even photos. She said, "Your refusal... broke my heart," implying that his choice was motivated more by personal grievances than by professional or legal obligations. "I might understand if it had to do with money or business. She made reference to scathing remarks Dhanush purportedly made prior to the release of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her post, saying, "But this feels like a deliberate attempt to vent a personal grudge."
