Cricket match turns violent
A domestic match in Bermuda turned violent when two players
exchanged blows after an argument, which led to a police being
called on the pitch and one of the players getting a life ban.
It was a game between Cleveland County Cricket Club and Willow
Cuts Cricket Club, where wicketkeeper Jason Anderson and
opposition batsman George O'Brien got into an ugly brawl.
The two seemed to have an argument at the end of an over, which
eventually turned into a physical fight. The video footage even
showed O'Brien swinging his bat at Anderson before the latter
mowed O'Brien to the ground.
Players from the pavilion, match officials and Bermuda Police
came running onto the pitch to intervene and separate the two
players, which was followed by Cleveland club president Carlton
Smith asking Anderson to leave the ground. The match, however,
resumed and Cleveland went on to win by 72 runs.
The Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) and Cleveland County Cricket
Club then slapped a life ban on Anderson after reviewing the video
footage. Meanwhile, O'Brien was banned for a six-month period
by BCB.
The BCB later issued a statement on the incident: "We condemn
this act without reservation and support the Bermuda Police
Service, the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control as well as the
Willow Cuts and Cleveland County Clubs as they seek to end this
irrational behavior on our sporting grounds and community."
