Oceanography
Oceanography is the study of the world
ocean, including aspects of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology,
and astronomy, among many others.
Sir John Murray, a Scottish
scientist during the late 1800s, is considered the founding father of the field
of oceanography and was the first to coin the term 'oceanography'. He
participated in the Challenger Expedition as an assistant and was the first to
note the existence of oceanic trenches.
It covers a wide range of topics, including marine organisms and ecosystem dynamics; ocean currents, waves, andgeophysical fluid dynamics; plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor; and fluxes of various chemical substances and physical properties within
the ocean and across its boundaries.
Research vessels are
constantly exploring the ocean, taking samples, measurements,
and comparing
their data to previous measurements to understand how things are changing in
the ocean.
Computer models are also an integral part
of modern oceanography; since we will never be able to sample the entire ocean,
models are developed using complex math equations, to predict what the ocean
currently looks like and how it may change in the future.
Study of the
oceans is linked to understanding global climate changes, potential global warming and related biosphere concerns. The atmosphere and ocean are linked because of evaporation and precipitation as well as thermal flux (and solar isolation).
