What is a photon?

Aphoton is one of the elementary particles of the universe and is accountable for much of its basic structure. Photons are responsible for one of the fundamental forces of nature – the electromagnetic force – and are often regarded by many as the basic unit of light. They are also responsible for forces in an electromagnetic field and are the main constituent of light that enables it to travel throughout the cosmos. Photons are basically little packets of energy, or electromagnetic waves, but they contain no mass or electrical charge whatsoever. They are released from atoms when a change in energy occurs, travel at the speed of light and can exist as both a wave and as a particle. When we see light, what we are really observing is the emission of photons from agitated atoms.
